Scott and Josh’s wedding was a perfect mix of sentimental, chaotic, and gloriously nerdy. They got married in June at the Crested Butte Mountain Wedding Garden, it was just one of those weddings where every single piece just clicked
I’ve known Scott for a while, we worked together at a UCAR internship program, so when he and Josh reached out, I already knew the day was gonna be something special. The two of them got ready together at their Airbnb with their groomsmen, which immediately set the tone: casual, fun, and full of chaos. Most of their crew are meteorologists and storm chasers, so there were a lot of weather jokes flying around while everyone got dressed.
Before the ceremony, we snuck away to this little park they’d stumbled across the day before. It had snowed recently (classic June Colorado), but it had already melted in the lower elevations, and the place looked like something out of a dream. Perfect green grass, mountain views, and those low-hanging clouds that make everything feel cinematic.
The ceremony itself was funny and emotional, and by the end, most people were either sniffling or full-on ugly crying. Scott and Josh had their guests cracking up one minute and tearing up the next, which honestly felt very on brand for them.
If you’re not familiar with the Crested Butte Mountain Wedding Garden, here’s the deal: it’s a town-owned ceremony spot tucked up around 9,000 feet. You get this insane mountain backdrop, a beautifully maintained garden, and a covered pavilion you can dress up however you want. It’s a total DIY setup: no frills, no in-house vendors, just a gorgeous blank slate. And the rental fee? Way more budget-friendly than most Colorado mountain venues.
Family and friends did all of the decor for the pavilion themselves and it looked fantastic.
And now for the dance party. Holy hell. There was a choreographed routine from some of the groomsmen that had everyone screaming. A conga line broke out at some point. Then the entire crowd belted “Last Christmas” like it was the middle of December, not June. Total madness. Total magic.
Scott and Josh’s wedding was goofy, personal, and unforgettable. Just two big-hearted nerds throwing the best damn party of their lives. If you’re dreaming of a gay DIY wedding in the mountains, Crested Butte might just be your spot. Just be prepared for altitude, spontaneous snow, and dancing until your legs give out.
