If you’re dreaming of a budget wedding in Boulder, CO without sacrificing jaw-dropping views, then check out Victoria and Alan’s gorgeous wedding at Sunrise Amphitheater. These two pulled off a stunning, emotional, and budget-friendly wedding in the mountains, proving that you don’t need to spend tens of thousands of dollars to have an amazing day.
Before we get into the wedding, we need to talk about Victoria and Alan’s epic engagement session in Rocky Mountain National Park.
In September, we met up at Lily Lake, where the universe decided to throw in a full-on rainbow just for them. No big deal, just a literal symbol of good luck in the background of their photos. And as if that wasn’t magical enough, we drove up Trail Ridge Road, where fresh September snow started falling, giving us that rare fall-meets-winter combo you can only find in places like Rocky Mountain National Park.
Boulder is home to some seriously incredible wedding venues, but Sunrise Amphitheater is a hidden gem: and an affordable one at that. Nestled in the foothills of the Flatirons, this open-air amphitheater gives you panoramic mountain views, fresh pine-scented air, and that “top of the world” feeling, all without breaking the bank.
A little history for you (you know I’m a history nerd): Sunrise Amphitheater sits up on Flagstaff Mountain, looking down over Boulder like a nature-made throne. Built in the 1930s, it has this rustic, almost mystical vibe, like you could either be getting married or summoning a nature spirit (or both, no judgment).
- You can rent it for a 2-hour block for $400 (as of 2024).
- Reservations open one year in advance and book fast, so if you’re eyeing a peak-season date, set a calendar reminder!
- The amphitheater can hold up to 100 guests, making it perfect for an intimate yet scenic ceremony.
On the big day in May, we met up near Sunrise Amphitheater for their first look and private vows. This moment was adorable and emotional AF. They took a few minutes to read their private vows, just the two of them, with only the mountains and trees as witnesses. It’s becoming more and more popular for couples to read private vows to each other before their wedding ceremony.
The ceremony itself was equally as emotional: Grandma shed quite a few happy tears.
Victoria and Alan had a handmade wooden arch that added the perfect personal touch to the already stunning backdrop. It framed them beautifully.
After the ceremony, we made a quick stop at Lost Gulch Overlook for couples portraits.
Before their reception we also snuck in some fun portraits at this huge mural in Boulder I’ve always wanted to take photos with, but this was the first time I saw it without cars parked in front of it.
For their reception, Victoria and Alan did something super smart and unique, they booked The Studio Boulder, a co-working and event space that’s way more budget-friendly than a traditional wedding venue.
If you’re looking to keep costs down while still having a stylish, functional space, The Studio is a great option. It’s modern, artsy, and has a relaxed, creative vibe, making it a perfect blank slate for a reception.
Some perks of The Studio Boulder as a reception venue:
✅ More affordable than traditional wedding venues
✅ Already has tables, chairs, and some décor, so you don’t have to rent as much
✅ Allows you to bring in your own catering + alcohol (hello, savings!)
✅ Feels cool and unique, instead of just another generic ballroom
Victoria and Alan’s wedding is proof that you don’t need a massive budget to have an epic wedding. Here’s how they did it, and how you can too:
1. Pick an Affordable Venue (Like Sunrise Amphitheater!)
At $400, Sunrise Amphitheater is one of the cheapest and most scenic ceremony spots in Boulder.
2. Get Creative with Your Reception Venue
Instead of a pricey wedding venue, look at co-working spaces, breweries, or even Airbnb rentals for a unique and budget-friendly option.
3. DIY Where It Makes Sense
- They made their own wedding arch = savings.
- Used a Spotify playlist instead of a DJ = savings.
- Ordered pizza instead of going for a full-on catering setup.
4. Invest in What Matters Most
They kept costs low on the venue but made sure to hire an amazing photographer (wink, wink) to capture all the emotions, landscapes, and magic of the day.
